In terms of improving bowling technique, it’s hard to beat practice as the most important thing you can do. This doesn’t just mean taking part in more roll-ups, but taking the time to bowl a few dozen woods up and down the green, purposefully practicing a particular type of shot, and especially just trying to perfect the draw shot.
For general help in technique there are some good (but quite old) books around, but also some excellent videos now available online, a few of which are below:
Tony Allcock’s Art of Bowls Vol. 1 – Basics
Start with volume 1, and volumes 2 and 3 are linked from it. It’s over three hours of good content in all!
Bowling Tips from David Bryant
Spend an hour with David Bryant listening to how he lines up shots and prepares for delivery.
Lawn Bowls Delivery
A more recent video and the first in four bite-sized sections on delivering a wood.
Bowls Masterclass with Richard Corsie
Part 1 of a BBC Scotland series, with parts 2 and 3 also available.
